Scriptwriters Houston First Annual Pitch and Screenplay Competition Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 8:00 AM UPDATE: Extended Submission Deadline December 1, 2019
Goal Get feedback to improve your Pitch and Screenwriting. Enjoy a workshop atmosphere! Competition General Information
Six selected film scripts segments will be read aloud on January 18th, 2020. Authors are responsible for getting their own Readers and providing film-formatted scripts to each Entrant and/or Reader. Your contact information is required on each paper script submitted. The scripts can be up to 20 minutes of a TV show, feature film, or Miniseries. There will be no penalty if the script is less than 20 minutes but at 20 minutes the reading will be stopped.
The Readings are judged using seven criteria: Scene Setup, Character Depth, Dialogue Quality, Movement Along the Character Arc, Conflict, Action, and Conclusion (with a Transition). Each screen play will be graded by the five other Entrants. This grading will make up 70% of your total competition score.
Additionally, before each screen play is read, the Author will give a three minute oral Pitch. This Pitch is also graded by the other Entrants and constitutes the remaining 30% of your total score. Again this Pitch may be less than 3 minutes without penalty but will be stopped at 3 minutes. The criteria for judging the Pitch are: Synopsis (including Genre), Involvement, and Knowledge.
Once the marked ballots are collected, each Entrant will receive up to a total of 15 minutes oral feedback from the other Entrants.
The total possible exposure time for each Entrant is thus 38 minutes.
The two Entrants with the highest score will make their Pitch and have their screen play read to a professional judge in the “after lunch” session on the same day. If the number of Entrants warrants, two concurrent morning sessions may take place. In this latter instance, the very top winner of each session will present to the judge who will chose the overall winner.
Competition is open to Scriptwriters Houston active members at a cost of $30. Non-members must pay $35. Those who are Readers do not have to pay unless they wish to have lunch onsite ($10). Observers will be charged $10 for the day and $10 if they want lunch onsite. However, Readers and Observers cannot vote or provide oral feedback. Accepted Entrants must provide printed scripts to each of the other five Entrants and should provide a character-highlighted script for their own Readers. Other Entrants may be Readers.
Those interested in submitting may bring their script to the November 18th Scriptwriters Houston Meeting, or submit their script electronically to firstname.lastname@example.org. Electronic submissions must have COMPETITION in the subject line, as well as include the scriptwriter’s contact information within the body of the email. Electronic submissions must be submitted as PDF files and include only the title of the work on the cover page.
